Bonner Springs, Edwardsville school students prepare record number of Thanksgiving meals
BONNER SPRINGS, KAN. – Students from the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville School Districts are hoping to make this holiday season a little brighter for those in need.
Through a district-wide effort, students and staff at Edwardsville Elementary were able to package 65 Thanksgiving baskets for Feed His Lambs.
Feed His Lambs is a nonprofit organization that feeds families in the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville School District.
Edwardsville Elementary has partnered with the organization for several years. For the second year in a row a district-wide food drive was held to collect items for the baskets, and money to purchase gift cards for additional items.
Each basket included vegetables, stuffing, a pumpkin pie and green bean casserole handmade by third graders at EDW, a gift card for a turkey, among other items.
This year’s project was the biggest yet, with a total of 65 baskets going to families who might otherwise not have a Thanksgiving dinner. Kristin Moulin, a Counselor at EDW organized the project and says it’s a great way to give back.
“It’s amazing to see the kids excited to do something for someone else, and it really does make a difference.”

STUDY: Workplace deaths decrease in Kansas
KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Kansas had 76 workplace fatalities in 2012
compared to 78 recorded in 2011, according to the Census of Fatal
Occupational Injuries, conducted by the Kansas Department of Labor
(KDOL), Workers Compensation Division in cooperation with the U.S.

Some of the statistics include:
These source documents include death certificates, workers compensation reports, motor vehicle accident reports, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports, news accounts, coroner’s reports, obituaries, employer questionnaires, and other federal and state records.
Each fatality is counted in the state where the incident occurs regardless of the state of employment. This ensures there is no duplication of reporting by the states.
It should also be noted that although states are required to keep records of heart attack and illness victims, they are excluded from the count.
Some of the statistics include:
- Transportation incidents in Kansas accounted for 65.8 percent of the fatal work-related injuries in 2012 with 50 fatalities. Of the 50 transportation-related fatal injuries, 33 fatalities or 66 percent were roadway incidents involving motorized land vehicles. Non-roadway incidents, such as a tractor overturned in a farm field, accounted for another six fatalities or 12 percent of the transportation-related fatal injuries. Transportation incidents that involved pedestrians accounted for three fatalities or 6 percent of the total.
- Within the goods producing industry group, the natural resources and mining industry had the most work-related fatalities for 2012 with 20 or 26.3 percent of the total. This industry includes the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting sector.

KCKCC Volleyball 'family" off to nationals
By ALAN HOSKINS
KCKCC Sports Information Director
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- It is a family not quite like any other – a family assembled from Alaska on the West, Puerto Rico on East, Michigan to the North and Texas to the South and several Kansas communities in between.
Officially, it’s the national tournament-bound Kansas City Kansas Community College volleyball team but to head coach Mary Bruno, her staff and the 14-member Blue Devil squad its far more than just a team.
“KCKCC volleyball is family,” says Bruno. “We’re always together, spending time with the same focus. Everyone gets along and enjoys each other so much. It’s an absolute joy to coach these girls. I look forward every day to coming to practice with them and am so proud of them.”
“I consider them all my sisters,” says co-captain Lily Thornberg. “We’ve really grown together. In Florida, we stayed at a big house together and had family dinners and went to the beach together. We’ve really bonded.”
The Blue Devils will open tournament play Thursday at 11 a.m. against Glendale, Ariz., at Phoenix College in Phoenix. All games will be streamed in the NJCAA website by clicking on national tournaments.
It’s a family put together from far distance places. Sophomore defensive specialist Lily Cullers came to KCKCC from Palmer, Alaska, after being discovered on a recruiting website. The same for 6-2 freshman outside hitter Cecelia Augustine of Ypsilanti, Mich. Both came to the KCKCC campus for a visit, liked what they saw and signed.
Four Blue Devils are from Puerto Rico. Libero of the Year Andrea Aparicio and Jayhawk second team selection Jasdel Gonzalez were discovered on a recruiting trip taken by Bruno (Dee Bruno) and her mother in December of 2012. Freshman Kimberly Martinez was discovered by manager Franchelle Gonzalez (sister of Jasdel) while living in Puerto Rico. The fourth, Junelie Irizarry, had moved to Papillion, Neb., when discovered by the KCKCC staff.
“Coach Mary and Coach Dee came to Puerto Rico for a recruiting tournament for American coaches and we kept talking by e-mail and phone and they offered the best,” says Aparicio, who arrived in the U.S. for the first time in July of 2013. “First it was hard but then I started adapting.” Fluent in English, Aparicio hopes to earn an AA next spring and play two more years in the U.S. before returning home.
Blair Russell, the Jayhawk Conference’s Most Valuable Player this year, was a three-sport star at Marysville, Kan., but started her volleyball career at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Tex. “I tore up my shoulder my first semester so I came back,” says Russell. “I knew the Bruno’s because my sister (Riley Russell) played here. I called Mary and she let me transfer. I am so thankful. After I tore my shoulder I was not sure I wanted to play but I’m so glad. Otherwise I would not be here with my teammates.”
The remainder of the squad is all from Kansas. Sophomores Lily Thornberg and Peyton Pender, a transfer from Saint Mary, are both from Junction City. Kailee Dudley, a summer transfer from Butler County, went to high school at Lawrence Free State, while soph Carlyn Walsh attended Wichita Northwest. The three other freshmen are from Leavenworth (Allyssa Lutgen), Douglas (Janelle Fowler) and KCK’s Bishop Ward (Lexi Nick).
Four Blue Devils – all sophomores – finished among the national leaders in statistics. Thornberg, who was named Co-Setter of the Year, and No. 5 in assists with 10.74 per set, was on Bruno’s wish list early.
“Mary saw me in a traveling tournament my junior year and kind of followed me,” says Thornberg. “It was between here and Hutchinson and once I spent time with the coaches and others here, it was an easy decision.”
Dudley, who was the Jayhawk Freshman of the Year in 2013, contacted Bruno about transferring when she decided not to return to Butler.
“She was kind of a last minute addition,” says Bruno. And a good one, earning All-Jayhawk first team honors and finishing 21st nationally in blocks (1.24) and 30th in hitting percentage (.317). “A great decision,” said Dudley.
Russell, who was all-state in volleyball, honorable mention all-state in basketball and a four-year qualifier in the state track meet at Marysville, finished fifth in the nation in kills (516) and eighth in average (3.94).
“I just love volleyball, my favorite sport,” said Russell of her decision to play college volleyball. “It’s a team sport where you rely on everybody.”
Aparicio was something of a human dynamo diving on the floor countless times to return shots as she took advantage of her 5-4 size to make numerous saves. “I think being small helps. I’m a little faster and react better,” said Aparicio, who finished 21st in the nation in digs per set (5.54) and 22nd in total digs (693).

7 Kansas City Kansas Community College volleyball players earn All-Jayhawk league honor
By ALAN HOSKINS
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Kansas City Kansas Community College’s nationally tournament-bound Lady Blue Devils dominated the 2014 All-Jayhawk Conference volleyball team like no team in recent years, placing four players on the first team and sweeping most of the individual honors.
Outside hitter Blair Russell was named the 2014 the Most Valuable Player, Andrea Aparicio the Libero of the Year, Lily Thornberg Co-Setter of the Year and Mary Bruno Co-Coach of the Year.
Middle blocker Kailee Dudley joined Russell, Aparicio and Thornberg on the first team while outside hitter Jasdel Gonzalez was named to the second team and middle blocker Junelie Irizarry earned honorable mention. All are sophomores.
Russell, Thornberg, Aparicio and Dudley were also named to the seven-member All-District N Team while Gonzalez and Irizarry were named to the second team.
“Four players on the first team is the most we’ve ever and the six to receive post-season honors the most ever and reflects the hard work they’ve put in,” said KCKCC Coach Mary Bruno. “The three who received the individual honors (Russell, Thornberg and Aparicio) spent the spring in the gym making changes that we had asked them to make. The awards may have come this fall but it was the spring season that helped them develop into the players they are today.”
Ranked No. 8 in the final Division II poll, KCKCC will go into the NJCAA national tournament seeded No. 7. The Blue Devils will open national tournament play against No. 10 seeded Glendale, Ariz., in Phoenix Thursday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m.
Bruno and Riann Mullis of Cowley were named co-coaches of the year on the All-Jayhawk team. Other selections on the 10-member All-Jayhawk team included Julia Stringer and Kourtney Blaufuss of Fort Scott, Brianna Pontious of Johnson County, Lana DaSilva of Cowley, Polette Medina of Coffeyville and Halley Scott of Allen County.
A graduate of Marysville High School where she was all-state in volleyball, all-state honorable mention in basketball and a four-year qualifier in the Kansas state track and field meet, Russell finished fifth in the nation in kills (516) and eighth in average (3.94).
Thornberg, a Junction City standout, was fifth in the nation in assists per set with 10.74 per game; Dudley, a Lawrence Free State grad who transferred from Butler in July, finished 21st in blocks (1.24 per set) and 30th in hitting percentage (.317); and Aparicio was 21st in digs per set (5.54) and 22nd in total digs (693).

KCKCC's Cierra Gaines Jayhawk Player of the Week
By ALAN HOSKINS
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Kansas City Kansas Community College guard Cierra Gaines is the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week for her play in the Lady Blue Devils’ two opening wins last week.
A 5-7 sophomore, Gaines scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in KCKCC’s opening 96-38 opening win over Missouri Valley JV and then followed it up with 16 points and four rebounds in an 86-62 win at North Central Missouri Saturday.
Gaines’ 12 field goals in the two games include five 3-point baskets.
“It’s the other things that I’m seeing her do to help make her a more rounded player on the defensive end,” said KCKCC Coach Valerie Stambersky. She’s averaging three steals and two assists while playing about 24 minutes per game.
A native of Glen Carbon, Ill., outside St. Louis, Gaines played high school basketball at Edwardsville with Blue Devil teammate Erin Anderson. Gaines played one year at Merrimac Community College before transferring to KCKCC at the start of the 2014 Spring Semester.
The Lady Blue Devils return to action this weekend when they host the annual Keith Lindsey Classic. KCKCC will play Ellsworth Friday at 6 p.m. and Penn Valley Saturday at 4 p.m. In other women’s games, Fort Scott will play Penn Valley Friday at 2 p.m. and Ellsworth Saturday at noon.
Four men’s games are also on tap with Highland playing St. Louis Community College Friday at 4 p.m. and KCKCC facing On Point Hoops Academy at 8 p.m.
Highland will also play On Point Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Blue Devil men facing St. Louis at 6 immediately after the KCKCC Athletic Hall of Fame induction of Duane Shaw and the late Keith Lindsey.

KCKCC Students and Faculty Talk About Military Service During Veterans Speak Event
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- Students, staff and faculty members at Kansas City Kansas Community College had the opportunity to share their military experience during the annual Veterans Speak event Nov. 10.
Among the guest speakers were Sarah E. Finney, U.S. Army; Alex Hanley, U.S. Air Force; Diane Hite, U.S. Marine Corps; Ruben Noguera, U.S. Marine Corps and Cherilee Walker, U.S. Navy. The event served as a way for the KCKCC community to honor those who have served in the military.
“In this age of ISIS terrorism, fear and kidnapping of innocent school girls, we must not forget the services of the great men and women who sacrifice their lives in order that we might have a more secured and better future,” said Ewa Unoke, associate professor of political science at KCKCC. “This years’ turnout was very impressive. In total, there were an estimated 80 students, faculty and staff members who participated.”
Each of the panelists took a few moments to share their experiences in the military. Introductions were followed by questions from Unoke, who served as moderator, as well as some questions from the audience. Among those who attended were KCKCC students, faculty and staff members.
“Many of the students at KCKCC are veterans, and it is important to give them an opportunity to be showcased on Veterans Day,” said Joseph Grasela, reference librarian at KCKCC and co-organizer of the event. “It is important for their fellow students to see that they are just like them, trying to improve their lives and advance now that they are no longer in the service.”
Grasela said by having an event such as Veterans Speak, it gives students and staff an opportunity to show appreciation for those who served their country.
“We are very thankful to all faculty who supported the event,” he said. “We hope the students in the audience took away an appreciation for the sacrifices that the veteran speakers made for them. We also hope that the veterans had an opportunity to be showcased and realize just how valuable their contributions to our country were, no matter how large or small.”
The event was sponsored by the Students for Global Peace, the Ralph Bunche Society, the Intercultural Center and the KCKCC Library. For more information about Veterans Speak, contact Dr. Ewa Unoke at 913-288-7119 or by email at eunoke@kckcc.edu. Bishop Ward High School President guest on Archbishop’s radio show
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Bishop Ward High School’s new President, Father Thomas Schrader O. Carm., was a guest on Archbishop Naumann’s Radio show “The Shepherd's Voice”.
The Show aired on Sunday November 9th at 10 a.m. on KEXS 1090 AM. The show can be listened to virtually at: http://archkck.libsyn.com/wards-new-president.
This segment of “The Shepherd’s Voice” featured an interview with Fr. Schrader. Listeners learned more about what brought Fr. Schrader to Kansas City and how he was chosen to be the new president of Bishop Ward.
Prior to his arrival in Kansas City, Fr. Schrader was the parochial vicar of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Tenafly, New Jersey.
Before that he was President of Crespi Carmelite High School for nine years in Encino, California. Fr. Schrader has been all over the country and brings a wealth of experience to help guide Bishop Ward.
In the few short months that Fr. Schrader has been at Bishop Ward, he already is leaving his finger print.
He helped dream up the idea of Fund-A-Cyclone for the 36th Annual Auction. This successful campaign raised just over forty-six thousand dollars for student scholarships.
Bishop Ward is blessed to welcome Fr. Schrader and looks forward to the future.
“I am energized by the loyal support of alumni, parents and friends and excited to shape Bishop Ward’s future generation of moral leaders,” said Fr. Schrader.
